~I suppose I should introduce myself. I am geckofan1, and I am writing this as an extension of an English assignment for our mythology unit. Enjoy!
Archetypal Hero
Jani stared out the bus window in extreme agitation. When was the stupid bus driver going to realize that the speed limit was way over 20mph? She really wished she didn't live so far out, because the only bus driver that actually came this far was set on going as slow as legally possible.
They finally pulled up to her stop. She got off at the end of the lane and started home. The path was damp in the half light, although it was only August. The old mansion loomed in the distance, dark and forbidding to most. Jani, however, had lived here since her parents had disappeared, two months after her birth, and was in no way afraid of this place.
"Hello, Marion," she said to a middle-aged woman stooping over a long-dead rosebush.
"Still finding it difficult to let go?" she asked, with the slightest smirk.
"Yes. I know it's been a while, but..." Her voice trailed off, and she gently shook her head, smiling.
"You'd better get inside, dear. Your grandmother is looking for you." Marion turned away, sighing.
Jani walked up to the door, a slight sense of foreboding. Her grandmother usually waited until evening to talk to her. What was so important?
Her grandmother was predictably in her old study, pacing restlessly.
"January," she said briskly, walking towards her. "There has been a sign."
A sign? Of what? Jani had no idea what this was about.
"Your parents, dear," her grandmother continued. "They've been sighted."
A short intake of breath. Jani's parents hadn't been seen since their disappearance thirteen years ago. They'd looked, for sure, but nothing had come up.
She listened intently as her grandmother explained, her mind clouded with thoughts. She took a lock of her dark hair and twirled it between her fingers. Her grandmother watched her solemnly with her pale eyes, wishing there was something she could do to comfort her granddaughter. However, there wasn't much you could do when you were dead.
Jani had been born with a most unusual ability- she could see the restless souls of the dead, wandering the Earth. Her grandmother had died long before she was born. So had most of the residents of her mansion, excepting Marion, who had cared for Jani from infancy, and Marlin, the butler, who had died of fever when Jani was five. Even after Marion's death the year before, she was still cared for by them, and she considered them her family.
"Do you have any schoolwork?" her grandmother asked, to fill the silence. Jani slowly shook her head.
"May I be excused?" she asked.
Her grandmother nodded. She got up and left the study, still thinking things over. She'd waited for this day....
Some proof that they were alive....
